My complaint is about the recent tragedy that happened in my country, Philippines, due to a heavy typhoon named "Frank". Almost the whole Philippines was affected but the biggest issue is the Ship named Princess of the Stars that sank in the the coast of San Fernando, Romblon last June 21. Almost 800 are passengers and less than a hundred bodies are found. It's been days and still there is no news on the hundred more bodies that were missing. I hope the Government and the Suspicio Lines that owns this ship will make a quick move to find more bodies and bring the bodies to their respective families. Families are waiting, grieving to someone missing.

#51 - A New Telephone Scam

I received this in an email from a trusted source and I thought it important enough to post.

We actually received a call last week from the 809 area code. The woman said 'Hey, this is Karen. Sorry I missed you--get back to u s quickly. I Have something important to tell you.' Then she repeated a phone number beginning with 809 . 'We didn't respond'.

Then this week, we received the following e-mail:

Subject: DON'T EVER DIAL AREA CODE 809 , 284 AND 876

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION PROVIDED TO US BY AT&T. DON'T EVER DIAL AREA CODE 809

This one is being distributed all over the US . This is pretty scary, especially given the way they try to get you to call.
Be sure you read this and pass it on.
They get you to call by telling you that it is information about a family member who has been ill or to tell you someone has-been arrested, died, or to let you know you have won a wonderful prize, etc.

In each case, you are told to call the 809 number right away. Since there are so many new area codes these days, people unknowingly return these calls.

If you call from the US , you will apparently be charged $24.25 per-minute.

Or, you'll get a long recorded message. The point is, they will try to keep you on the phone as long as possible to increase the charges. Unfortunately, when you get your phone bill, you'll often be charged more than $24.00.

WHY IT WORKS:

The 809 area code is located in the British Virgin Islands (The Bahamas).

The charges afterwards can become a real nightmare. That's because you did actually make the call. If you complain, both your local phone company and your long distance carrier will not want to get involved and will most likely tell you that they are simply providing the billing for the foreign company. You'll end up dealing with a foreign company that argues they have done nothing wrong.

Okay, I have to wonder just how many people will fall for this one, spelling mistakes and all?

I did report this spam to Google/G-mail in the hopes that it will stop just one other person from being scammed, because as you know there is bound to be someone that is going to fall for this and freely hand out their info.

So the message reads ~

Dear Account User

This Email is from Gmail Customer Care and we are sending it to every
Gmail Email User Accounts Owner for safety. we are having congestions
due to the anonymous registration of Gmail accounts so we are shutting
down some Gmail accounts and your account was among those to be
deleted.We are sending you this email to so that you can verify and
let us know if you still want to use this account.If you are still
interested please confirm your account by filling the space below.Your
User name,password,date of birth and your country information would be
needed to verify your account.

Due to the congestion in all Gmail users and removal of all unused
Gmail Accounts, Gmail would be shutting down all unused Accounts, You
will have to confirm your E-mail by filling out your Login Information
below after clicking the reply button, or your account will be
suspended within 24 hours for security reasons.

After following the instructions in the sheet, your account will not
be interrupted and will continue as normal. Thanks for your attention
to this request. We apologize for any inconveniences. Warning!!!
Account owner that refuses to update his/her account after two weeks

All I can say is I hope that Google shuts them down quickly before they can do any damage to some young or non-understanding/unsuspecting victim.
